Taino Petroglyphic representations of Atabey (1270 AD) in, Caguana, Puerto Rico at Caguana Ceremonial Ball Courts.
Atabey (Ah-Tah-Bay) aka Ataybeyra and Atabex, is the Earth Mother and Goddess of fertility and fresh water in the Taino (Island Arawak) tradition. For me she represents holding on to ones culture, history and spirit despite and in spite of colonization, white supremacy, patriarchy and capitalist greed.
How does one survive and thrive in the asylum of systemic and institutional oppression while maintaining a strong sense of self and community?
Adaptation over assimilation.
Interdiciplinary/Multimedia exhibit "Son of Atabey" included photography, ceramics, screen-print, text, audio, performance and community involvement. Ernesto "Eroc" Arroyo-Montano
